Lanny Brown heads out July 1
Gilroy – Assistant police chief Lanny Brown will retire July 1, 2007, exactly 31 years after he was first sworn in as a police officer in Novato. He has worked 21 years with the Gilroy Police Department, where he works with four other command staff, overseeing 57 sworn officers. Within the department, he is second only to Chief Gregg Giusiana; as one of its best-known faces, he has been mentioned as the chief’s possible successor.

Brown made the decision last month, and notified Police Chief Gregg Giusiana and City Administrator Jay Baksa two weeks ago. He may or may not need a replacement: the police are hoping to commission an organizational study, which could change the department’s leadership structure. If approved by City Council, said Brown, the study would probably take two months, and would be completed before his departure.
