The 700 block of First Street was ripe with commotion Tuesday evening after police say a man tried to steal $92 worth of makeup from Nob Hill Foods before getting caught – twice.
Around 5 p.m., Jason Albert, 41, got in a brawl with store security after attempting to exit the grocery store at 777 First Street without paying for a significant amount of concealed cosmetic merchandise, according to the Gilroy Police Department.
Police say the Livermore resident had a federal warrant for his arrest and was wanted by the U.S. Marshal Service for weapons violations. He ran across the street toward Mission Park Apartments at 766 First Street, according to the GPD.
“Loss prevention was trying to apprehend Mr. Albert, when he attempted to flee,” said GPD Sgt. Chad Gallacinao.
Albert was pursued and eventually overcome by Nob Hill’s loss prevention team. After being apprehended by security, police say Albert complained of injuries, at which point medical assistance was summoned.
Shortly after, Albert was met by a flurry of police units, ambulances and fire trucks with a slow line of traffic cautiously curved around the scene as increasing officers gathered at the site.
According to GPD reports, Albert was arrested around 5:22 p.m. for second-degree burglary, threats to commit crime, petty theft with specified priors, robbery and grand theft of money.
Gallacinao explained during this time, there was also a car accident reported at the same address – 766 First Street – though he could not speculate if the incident was related to the disturbance caused by Albert.
“A lot of things happened in that general area in that hour,” he remarked.
The collision was reported at 5:25 p.m. and involved a couple of vehicles, according to Gallacinao, who said the fire department was summoned to administer medical aid.
GPD has limited information on the car accident however, as the request for assistance was canceled by parties involved.
