Do you know that you can attend a free movie this month? Sponsored by the City of Gilroy, Gilroy Arts and Culture Commission, the Gilroy Public Art Committee and the Gilroy Arts Alliance, the event will be held Thursday on the lawn at the Gilroy Center for the Arts, 7341 Monterey St. The classic, G-rated comedy “The Love Bug” will be the feature film and special reserved parking is available for everyone who arrives in a Volkswagen Bug. Before the feature begins there will be a premier showing of “The Lazy Song,” a short movie filmed in Gilroy and performed by Gilroy youth. The movie begins at dusk but the grounds open at 8:30 p.m. for folks to secure a place on the lawn. Bring your blankets and chairs, maybe get your block, your church group, craft group, scout group, family and friends to come along and enjoy a free movie under the stars. Concessions available; alcoholic beverages are not allowed. The event will end by 10:30 p.m. I look forward to seeing you there.
Do you know that Kevin Heath is the new operations manager of the Interim Center for the Arts? You may know the congenial Heath as the originator and co-owner of Limelight Actors Theater. He is also a former president of the Gilroy Arts Alliance, making him well versed in the Center’s business and operations. You will soon notice extended hours at the Center, which will include evening hours at least one night a week. More outreach to the community, businesses and artists and a more cohesive relationship with local artists are some of the things that Heath hopes to accomplish.
Do you know that the Center for the Arts is available for meetings, classes and events at very affordable rates? It is the perfect place for small groups such as scrapbookers, crafters and clubs. If you’re looking for a place to gather, consider the Center. Contact:

Do you know that the Gilroy Arts Alliance (GAA) is the nonprofit group that runs the Center for The Arts? They depend on volunteers to help keep the Center open and membership donations to support day-to-day operations. Volunteer docents are needed during business hours as well as people to help maintain the outside of the building. To volunteer or become a member, email Heath or visit the website.
GAA is looking for artists to create art during open hours at the Center. We’ll set aside a place and give you publicity on our website. There is no charge during regular hours. Artists are also welcome to sell their creations in the Artisan’s Corner depending on availability of space. Contact GAA if interested.
“The Art of Graphic Design and Illustration” will be displayed at the Center Aug. 10-Sept. 24. Among the featured work will be writing and art by Kevin Rubio, “Out & About” cover illustrations by Sylvia Myrvold and graphic designs by Kat Filice of Articulate Solutions.
“Journeys” will be on display Aug. 17-25, with extended hours Aug. 17-18. The exhibit will include writings by Rochelle Arellano, paintings by Imelda Osana, fiber art by Carol Peters and photography by Gonzalo Flores.
I happened to be in the Center when Rochelle and Imelda came in to view the space and was fascinated by the exhibit’s theme. I learned that Rochelle made the Christian Pilgrimage, “The Way of St. James,” a 400-mile walk from Pamplona to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in 27 days. She blogged along the way and is now in the process of writing a book. When Rochelle and Imelda were in a local coffee shop planning the exhibit, Carol Peters wandered in, overheard them talking and asked to be a part of “Journeys.” Have I sparked your interest? Come and see for yourself.
Carol Harris represents the City of Gilroy Art and Culture Commission.
