You’ll have to bear with me if this column doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, I’m dealing with what the doctors classified as a “severe” brain injury following my brush with death in a motorcycle accident a month and a half ago.

But honestly, It’s not that bad and I can tell you that my heart is functioning both physically and emotionally. I feel like I’m improving every day and the truth is, all of you are a big reason why.

I was going a bit out of my mind in the hospital, taking swings at orderlies, spitting on the floor and pulling various (and vital) tubes out of my body; according to the docs, normal and predictable.

But it was the support I got from all of you guys, and of course my family, that got me through the ordeal. A laundry list of drugs kept me alive but, in hindsight, it was the prayers and support of a network of friends, relatives and even people I’ve never met that kept my soul and spirit alive. Thank you so much for the cards, emails and prayers.

They really kept me going.

Today, not only am I breathing on my own, I’m taking in the real meaning of this life-defining experience. Few of us get a second chance at life but I am a living testament to the power of prayer and maybe even miracles.

Okay, enough of the depressing near-death talk. How about those Haybalers?

I was lucky enough to get discharged from hell, I mean the hospital, in time to attend the CCS Championship game with my family and holy cow, what a game it was.

Hollister’s defense absolutely shut down the Oak Grove attack through the first two quarters. One big moment that stands out in my mind was when Vinnie Sardam was in pursuit of the Eagles quarterback. An offensive lineman rolled out to block Sardam but the Haybaler wasn’t having any of it.

Sardam hit the guy and literally lifted him up off the ground before getting back to harassing the quarterback.

Offensively, Hollister quarterback Karson Klauer played a game that I can only describe as inspired. His passes were crisp and on target and he was doing a great job of using his feet to stay out of trouble. And then there was the bomb down the field to Art Esparza. What an incredible play to pull off in the most crucial of situations. With time winding down and the ‘Balers down, Klauer delivered with a deep pass down the left sideline to Esparza, who somehow managed to separate himself from double coverage just enough to reel it in and rumble his way into the endzone for the game-winning touchdown.

Everybody wearing a red helmet played an outstanding game last Saturday and I’m just glad I was able to see it.

Thanks for putting on such a great show, guys. It’s awesome to know that the title was claimed by such a class act of a football team.
