Donated items to be auctioned include hotel stays, theater
tickets and gift certificates
Gilroy – The public is invited to a barbecue and silent auction at Ascencion Solorsano Middle School Friday. Proceeds from the fundraiser go to benefit the school’s athletic teams.

This is the third year Solorsano has been open and many parents are unfamiliar with the silent auction and barbecue tradition.

“I really want parents to be aware (of the event) – it’s so new,” said Solorsano parent Debbie Gjerde who has spearheaded the fundraiser for the past two years.

Parents and students are encouraged to attend from 5pm to 8pm and mingle with other families. Hotdogs and hamburger plates will be served for $3 and $4 each. A DJ with karaoke will serve as entertainment, as well as performances by Studio Three Dance Studio and West Coast Tae Kwon Do.

According to Principal Sal Tomasello, most of the Solorsano staff will be present, too.

“It’s a great event. We must have over $12,000 worth of items to raffle off,” he said.

Donated items for the silent auction range from ski passes, overnight hotel stays, horseback riding lessons and theater tickets to MP3 players, jewelry and restaurant gift certificates.

The money raised will help purchase athletic uniforms and provide teams with transportation to athletic events, Gjerde said.

Bidding for the silent auction closes at 8pm.
