GILROY – Nine seniors started, including a rare designated hitter appearance from pitcher Max Fishler, as the Gilroy High baseball team celebrated Senior Day with an 18-3 drubbing of Alvarez on Tuesday in Gilroy.

The Mustangs sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, put up an eight-spot and cruised in the Tri-County Athletic League matchup.

Senior Jordan Holler (3 for 4, four runs, RBI) began the snowball effect with a single to open the first, scoring three batters later on one of the Eagles’ two errors in the frame. Getting a start at third base, Angel Gamboa drove in a run with a bloop single to left and Gabe Bonilla chased home two runs with a double.

Holler picked up his second hit of the inning, driving in Bonilla, and Taylor Chris (2 for 3, two-RBI) capped the scoring with an RBI-double to put the Mustangs up 8-1.

Senior Chris Urtiz went 3 for 3 with three RBI, getting a much appreciated start at second base. Fellow senior Matt Elston wasn’t to be left off of the stat sheet, notching a pair of RBI.

GHS tacked on a run in the second, five in the third and four in the fourth to put the game well out of reach.

Senior Tyler Price took the hill for Gilroy, settling down by striking out the side in the second after allowing a run in the first and was credited with the win. Senior Michael Hartman took over in the third, surrendering one run and striking out two Eagles.

Now at 16-8-1 overall and 12-4 in TCAL play, the Mustangs will wrap up the regular season with back-to-back games versus rival San Benito starting today at 4 p.m. in Hollister.
