Brent Newton tossed a six hit complete game as the Gilroy High baseball team nudged past crosstown foe Christopher High 2-1 on Thursday in Gilroy.

The ball clubs were able to squeeze in the early-season contest before the rain swept across the area.

Newton fanned 10 batters in the seven-inning gem.

Mario Talamante was just as effective on the bump for the Cougars, allowing just seven hits in five innings of work. His only blemishes, two unearned runs.

Ronnie Reed and Bubu Garcia had a pair of base knocks each for the Mustangs while Bryant Cid and Nader Elaskary had two hits apiece for the Cougars.

The teams meet once again Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Christopher High.
