The Gilroy baseball and softball teams will look to extend their season another few days when they take their respective fields at 10am today.
The baseball team will be at San Jose’s PAL Stadium taking on No. 4 Wilcox (22-11) while the softball team begins its Central Coast Section quarterfinal contest simultaneously at Salinas Sports Complex against No. 3 Lynbrook (18-3).
Wins would send the Mustangs to the CCS semifinals, where the baseball team would play either top-seeded Valley Christian or No. 8 Homestead and the softball team would face either No. 3 San Benito or No. 7 Monta Vista.
Both teams enter the second round facing teams they haven’t yet played this year.
Softball coach Catherine Hallada has continually said she prefers to face teams they know little about because it allows the girls to stay loose and play their style.
That theory is sure to be tested against Lynbrook, which won the De Anza League this year and earned a first-round bye in the playoffs.
In its opening round game, Gilroy faced an unfamiliar foe in Piedmont Hills and won 3-1.
While the baseball team hasn’t faced Wilcox, the teams share six common opponents.
Most notably, the Chargers lost three of four games to San Benito, while Gilroy split with the Haybalers.
Wilcox has a loss on its record to Homestead, a team the Mustangs beat twice by a combined score of 32-2. Both teams lost to Bellarmine, although the Chargers fell 4-3 and Gilroy lost 9-1 and 15-1.
Wilcox also nabbed one win over Los Gatos in three tries, while the Mustangs fell 9-8 in their only matchup with the Wildcats. The teams also both beat Lynbrook and Monta Vista.
The baseball team beat Mitty 7-6 in the opening round.
If the baseball team wins, it will play Wednesday at either 4pm or 7pm at Municipal Stadium in San Jose. If the softball team wins, it plays at 7pm Thursday at PAL Stadium.
