Holly Lam scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter Friday night to help Gilroy High’s girls basketball team run away with a 52-28 victory over visiting Yerba Buena in the consolation bracket semifinals of the Mustang Classic.
Lam, a junior, made 10 of 15 free throws and led three double-figure scorers for the Mustangs (1-1).
“She battled toward the basket and scored or got fouled,” Gilroy coach Karen Hockemeyer said of Lam.
Gilroy began the second half on a 10-0 run, capped by Samantha de la Torre’s layup to take a 31-19 lead and force a Yerba Buena timeout with 4 minutes, 41 seconds left in the third quarter.
“We were working on defense. That was the key to the second half of the game,” Hockemeyer said of the 10-0 run.
De la Torre scored 12 points, Charlenne Medina added 10 and Brianna Barron scored eight for the Mustangs, who outscored the Aztec Warriors 13-2 in the third quarter.
“They just worked well together. The girls played a marvelous game,” Hockemeyer said.
Jenny Trinh led Yerba Buena with 13 points.
Gilroy opened the season with a 63-26 loss to Evergreen Valley on Thursday night.
The Mustangs advanced to meet Notre Dame of Salinas in the consolation bracket final at 11 a.m. Saturday.
