Dear Editor,

In regards to the article “Help Firefighters fill the boot for MDA,” I urge everyone to be generous to such a worthy cause. My two sons, my sister, my mother, and I experience many difficulties having myotonic Muscular Dystrophy. The disease is progressive and will complicate our l lives as time goes on.

Along with Jerry Lewis selling shamrocks for MD in March, I applaud the firefighters for helping to fund research, summer camps, and awareness of this debilitating disease. Thank you!

Stanford, the MD Association, and the wonderful doctors, genetic researchers, and therapists at Kaiser have treated us and cared for all of our concerns. MD can affect the heart, lungs, mobility, and contributes to learning difficulties. At this time, there is no cure, nor any medications to administer to alleviate symptoms or progression.

We would all appreciate any contributions to the MD Association and/or the firefighters collection ‘boots’. Thank you Gilroy firefighters for the opportunity to fund endeavors for MD. The collection will take place at First Street and Wren, Saturday from 9 to 2pm. Thank you.

Sue McGahey and family, Gilroy
