Mr. ter Horst was born April 25, 1924, in Alamosa, Colo., to Esther Harrett Peters and Herman Henry ter Horst. When he was a young boy, his parents moved to Gilroy, where he attended school and grew up.
He joined the Navy Feb. 22, 1943, and took his basic training in Farragut, Idaho. He was sent to Port Hueneme and then to the Philippines, where his company was to hold the airstrip on Mactan Island, which was a landing place for pilots to rest and relax after a battle.
He was discharged April 29, 1946 and returned to Gilroy and married Clara Mae Owens. There were two daughters born to them, Rose Ann and Joann. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for more than 30 years.
His wife died at a very young age, leaving him to raise their daughters. After a few years he met and married Mary Wooldridge Sept. 6, 1959.
Mr. ter Horst was a member of the Christian Church in Gilroy, a past president of the Lions Club, a member of the Moose Lodge and the VFW. He was a police reserve officer for more 15 years. He was also a member of NARFE in Gilroy and in Nampa.
He and Mary moved to Nampa in Sept 1990. It was not long before he desired to work again, so he joined Can-Ada Security until Dec. 28, 2004.
He is survived by his wife of 49 1/2 years, Mary; daughters, Rose Ann ter Horst of Washington and Joann Fachin of Minnesota; stepdaughter, Deborah Mayes of Oregon, stepson Larry Wooldridge of Texas; granddaughters, Clara Blodgette, Kathy Elwell, Donna Mayes, Sarah Wooldridge, Tasha Wooldridge, and Melissa and Melinda Wooldridge; grandsons, Eric and Heath Blodgette, Michael and Aaron Fachin, David and Jessica of Texas, Josh Wooldridge of Oregon; great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly; brother, Ramon ter Horst of Oregon; sister, Mary Lucido of Idaho; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy and David and three stepchildren, Linda and Tom Mitchell and Steven Wooldridge.
Arrangements were under the direction of Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel. (404 10th Ave.S.,Nampa, Idaho.
A viewing was held on March 15, 2005. Funeral services were held on March 16, 2005. Interment followed at Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, Boise.
