Let Elected Officials Run The City

looking for direction

I noticed recently that the Bonfante Gardens direction signs on (U.S.) 101, Masten (Avenue), and Santa Teresa (Boulevard) have been changed to the new name. There is a sign on Santa Teresa just before Mantelli (Drive) that says Gilroy Gardens 152 West 1/2 mile. However, when you get to 152, there is no sign directing you to turn right. Also, there is nothing at that intersection that says 152. There is only the street sign that says Hecker Pass Road. Perhaps a direction sign needs to be place at the intersection.

Red Phone:

Dear Caller, while city Traffic Engineer Don Dey wasn’t around at the time Bonfante Gardens (now Gilroy Gardens) was constructed, it is his understanding that the “private entity for Bonfante Gardens installed those signs, and the expectations would be for Gilroy Gardens to take care of any new signs.” No one from Gilroy Gardens has approached the city about signage. Dey added that traffic engineers applaud signage, “since it’s better to have a motoring public aware of where they are going.”

Another perspective, just for conversation, is whether taxpayers have any business footing the bill for marketing of a private entity such as Gilroy Gardens?

dude, where’s my car?

My neighbor just got his truck stolen last night. When the police arrived, he was told by an officer that Gilroy averages three stolen vehicles per day. Is this true, and if so, why doesn’t the Dispatch report these crimes in the police blotter?

Red Phone:

Dear Caller, There were 301 cars stolen in Gilroy in 2006, according to Gilroy police statistics. That averages out to less than one car a day. As for reporting it in the blotter, the Dispatch does report Gilroy police and Santa Clara County arrests and incidents and are working together to create a system where we can more accurately report such crimes.

Warning sign

i want to complain about a large billboard-like sign that’s sitting on a trailer off Luchessa Avenue it showed up this week. I’m sure city officials have seen it, and it has to be illegal. it’s just sitting on private propety it’s like 20 by 30 feet and sitting on private property. I’m wondering what the city can do about that. I’m sure some resident will get tired of it after awhile, hook it up to their trailer and haul it back to San Juan Bautista where it belongs. It advertises new homes in San Juan Bautista. Will you please have the city check on it because i’m sure it’s illegal?

Red Phone:

Dear Caller, you’re not the only one who wants to see that sign go south on U.S. 101. Scott Barron, City Code Enforcement Officer, has received complaints about it too.

Turns out the billboard is sitting on property in the county, so the city zoning ordinance that limits signs to 32 square feet doesn’t apply here.

The county does regulate this kind of thing and requires a permit for approved locations. However, Barron has spoken to the property owner, who has indicated he’d have the sign removed. When a Dispatch photographer went out to the land Friday, the sign was no longer there.
