GILROY – Santa Cruz-based band Big Rain brings its truck-load of rock, funk, blues and tropical grooves with a CD release and dance concert at the Historic Strand Theater at 9 p.m. today.
Big Rain is known to be dynamic and charismatic during its live show. The band has logged more than 500 performances since the release of its debut CD, “Sound of Freedom” in l997. Putting family first, the group became successful playing close to home and going on occasional road tours, gaining a strong following on the Central Coast.
“Every tour has brought new fans and new stories, ” said songwriter Bruce Guynn. “Now we know we have to take the music nd positive vibe we put out everywhere.”
Big Rain features Guynn on vocals, piano, keyboards and electric bass and singer-songwriter Peter Alaimo on Vocals, acoustic and electric guitars. Doc Wilcoxson is on violin, acoustic guitar, keyboards and vocals. Rod Wilson is on drums and percussion.
The music is considered a progressive mix of rock, blues, funk and more. With two successful CDs behind them, they recently release their new CD, “Private Collection.”
Big Rain has received acclaim from various media, radio and music retailers, but the thing that is most satisfying to the band members is the response from their audiences. Last month, when the band made a return appearance in Big Sur, the packed house was dancing and singing, answering back in response to Guynn’s vocal phrasings.
“We love that when we hit the first not and everyone gets up and starts dancing,” Guynn said. “That’s what it’s all about: Writing, playing and performing like tomorrow may never come.”
During their last show in San Luis Obispo, the group received five encores. Even through they were dead tired after performing for four hours, they put it all out there effortlessly as each song grew into the next one.
They took the time to talk with an meet people, thanking them for coming and buying CDs.
“What’s great about this is we all become part of the same experience,” Guynn said. “All it takes is a good song, great performance, the people and the band. We are all in this thing together.”
Big Rain will play at 9 p.m. at the Historic Strand Theater, 7588 Monterey St. For more information about the show, call 846-8455.
