Gilroy City Councilmember Zach Hilton recognized Garrison “Ziggy” Gemar as his 2023 Bike Person of the Year as part of May’s Bike Month celebrations.
“There are many bike advocates that don’t realize the positive impact they have on the community, and this is a great way to elevate them,” Hilton said.
Earlier in the month, Hilton sought nominations for the award to recognize a Gilroy resident of any age who has shown the qualities of a leader when it comes to the local bike community.
“I like biking because it is fun and a good workout,” Gemar said. “It helps my leg strength for football. Also, I think others should ride bikes, not only for themselves but also for the planet.”
“You show dedication and leadership for bike advocacy by encouraging others to ride their bikes to school, using your bike for errands around town, repairing your own bikes, and offering a bike to those that don’t have one,” Hilton told Gemar. “You have a positive impact on the community and this makes you a bike champion. You and I will continue to push the City of Gilroy forward.”
