A six-hour stalemate turned a Gilroy neighborhood into a scene of blaring megaphones and flashing police lights Wednesday night, as officers used a SWAT team, bomb squad robot and hostage negotiators to coax out an armed, wanted parolee holed up in the attic belonging to a family he barely knew.
Police are searching for as many as seven suspects who reportedly bashed one man in the face with a brick then tried to run over him and his companions with a car as the victims escaped into a nearby liquor store.
It's always in the back of my mind. I suppose that's true for anyone with a family member or friend in law enforcement. You can't help but have that tiny, nagging sense of dread that says, "What if ...?"
