 I would appreciate an update on the Hecker Pass construction project. I remember an article in the Gilroy Dispatch last year before the three-year project began that gave a timeline of what was planned. Now that we're almost through this summer's portion of the work, I'm curious as to what to expect next. I should have saved that article so I could refer to it, but didn't think about it at the time.

As a daily walker since retirement I have great concern for the safety of anyone within the walking/bicycle lane on Luchessa Avenue after the recent marking. The way it is currently marked you're forced into the guardrail and/or foliage, which has not been cut in a while, or forced to walk in the traffic lane to get around these obstacles. I normally walk starting between 5:45 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. and I have almost been struck twice, despite being aware of traffic.

In the last year, my neighbor has moved into his front and side yard on the dirt, six or seven cars that one day maybe restored. I live in a R1 Residential Zone. Every time I go out into my backyard, I am looking at a salvage yard. I think that there might be an ordinance on this one, but I know it would be a very low concern for the ordinance people because they are busy with a lot of stuff. Anyway, I have not given them a call because I think that nothing at all will happen. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

Can someone explain to the Community of Gilroy and me why the Gilroy Police Department does not have an independent Internal Affairs Office that is not run solely by Chief Denise J. Turner? That seems to be like having the fox watching over the hen house and may be ripe for scandal and lawlessness. The U.S. Attorney General and even our own President have called for major overhauls of the police departments across our country. Police dispatcher explained that the reason is that they (GPD) were a small department. I find this very disturbing given that the Police Department consumes 45 percent ($54 million) of all revenue collected ($120 million) by the City of Gilroy.

With the drought and all the dry grass around Gilroy High, is there still planned the 4th of July firework show?

I am perplexed at how dangerous the access to Christmas Hill Park is for anyone coming in from the levee. Especially for families with children! In my opinion, any family should have a stress-free stroll to the park and back from their home in a nearby neighborhood. There are two areas of concern, which have been enough to deter my family from visiting the park for years while our kids were toddlers. The first is the intersection at Miller and Tenth. It’s a four way stop, but a very busy intersection. I would love to see a crosswalk with flashing lights, like downtown has. That gets a family safely to the levee, yay! But now, the anxiety sets in; how are we all going to get to the park safely? If you have a stroller, a dog, a couple kids on bicycles, it is really sketchy there going down and back up Miller Avenue over the Uvas Crossing and trying to keep everyone in the so-called bike lane, out of harms way, with cars on your left and 5-foot drop on your right. Wouldn't it be amazing if the City of Gilroy installed a pedestrian bridge over Uvas Creek from the levee into Christmas Hill Park? Maybe it could exist about 100 yards east of Miller and go from the eucalyptus grove to the grassy landing near the BBQ area by the first baseball field. So, I want a crosswalk and a bridge! What are the odds?

I am a small business owner in Gilroy and I also live here. I have noticed that the maintenance for our roads is a patch and re-patch system. Potholes are filled and refilled repeatedly. My business is located, for five years, out in South Gilroy in one of our "industrial" areas and the road is in horrible condition. Probably the worst in the city, I believe. East Luchessa/Rossi road is falling apart, starting at Monterey going out to South Side, including Mayock and Obata. We don't even get the patch system in this area. It seems we have been forgotten by the city out here. I was hoping to find out if the City of Gilroy has this part of town scheduled for a road upgrade? It can get very busy out here and we are all driving while trying to dodge the worst parts of the road.

Someone parked his or her car in front of my house and it hasn’t moved for going on a week now. Is there a time limit for how long someone can leave their car on the curb and if so, who do I contact to get that enforced?

With the new housing construction on Luchessa Avenue, how soon will Suburban Propane be required to move out?
