What is the expected date the city traffic engineers will be turning on the (new) traffic light at the intersection of Princevalle and Luchessa Streets?Red Phone:One thing Red Phone appreciates, good caller, is the excellent planning and execution of projects by the City of Gilroy. Red Phone is always impressed with the thoroughness and rational thinking that civil servants of Gilroy are seen to exhibit. Red Phone contacted Gilroy Traffic Engineer, Henry Servin, about this particular traffic light.Servin said, “This traffic light(s) was installed by the housing developer, KB Homes, and indeed is ready to be turned on.” However, explained Servin, “We are going to wait till the summer to turn it on. For safety reasons, we will turn on the traffic lights during the week of June 22. We have young drivers from Gilroy High School, Gavilan College, mixed in with regular drivers using this intersection who will need time to adjust to the removal of the stop signs and the new traffic lights. It will be safer when in the summer.”So, good caller, the traffic lights will be turned on in due time, and hopefully at a safer time of the year.
At each of the three major off-ramps into Gilroy (1st Street, 10th Street, and Monterey) there is so much weed build-up, uncontrolled shrubs, trees are not trimmed or cared for, and rubbish that blows around and finds its way into our waterways. Also, the road surfaces, signage, and striping are in dire need of attention. Why doesn’t the city or county agencies take care of these “Gateway” areas into Gilroy? These off-ramps give the first impression of our town, could be more attractive, but are degraded by this lack of care and attention. Are there ANY plans in the numerous grand plans that Gilroy has put out there to address this?
Why haven’t the lights downtown been changed over to LED’s yet? It seems that the whole city has already been converted, but the one area that is supposed to be a priority with the city hasn’t? What gives? Sixth street and the downtown parking lots look and feel so much safer compared to the old yellow hued sodium lights that (make) these places look like a dingy industrial area and unsafe. Good and appropriate lighting increases a sense of community, and community pride, so one would think that the conversion of downtown lights would have been done first not last.
Who is in charge of the watering grass along Camino Arroyo between 6th and Leavesley? The sprinklers are set so high that the sidewalks and road are being watered.
Today I was reading about Audrie Pott in the Dispatch and the article indicates one of the people who assaulted her goes to Christopher High. Last month I had to show proof of residence for my child who will be starting high school in the fall. I found this unnecessary. I have lived in the same location for 20-plus years. My question is, does the person who assaulted Audrie Pott still live in Saratoga and was allowed to transfer to CHS or does he now live in Gilroy in the CHS district. None of the newspaper stories indicate he actually lives in Gilroy.
Just curious. Saw a carwash fundraising for a church happening at the corner of Church and Welburn. I thought we got in trouble for washing our cars. Guess people don't get the picture. This is on 4/12.
I travel northbound on Monterey Street five days a week while on my way to work in the morning and this signal light changes even though no vehicles approaching intersection from 3rd street. Usually takes approx. 30-45 seconds to cycle, but with no oncoming traffic in either direction.
I sit here finally fed up with the street racing, which goes on here on a somewhat regular basis. It begins promptly at 9:30 p.m. and lasts approximately 15 minutes each night and some nights residents who live up here are treated to late night racing on the roundabout somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 p.m. or later. What prompted my contacting Red Phone is the death recently in San Jose by a senseless game of the same variety. Young males fueled by too much testosterone who feel it necessary to take their frustrations out by engaging in this risky behavior. Did you not learn a lesson from the two idiots who decided their pleasure was more important than the young girl's life and who now sit in Santa Clara County jail? Apparently not or you wouldn't be driving like a maniac as I sit here writing this now.
We just moved to Gilroy from San Jose after 37 years. Its great down here and people drive differently. However one hot spot has been an issue and I think it is time to address it. West 6th Street at Wren is actually a pretty dangerous intersection. People drive way to fast down Wren then take the sharp turn onto west 6th. There is a school nearby and you have to be extra cautious because sometimes people do not see you or stop for you. I have seen near pedestrian misses, once a shouting match took place between the participants, and just this morning there was a wreck likely caused by a driver taking the turn from Wren to 6th to fast. This accident wiped out two of my neighbor’s vehicles. In talking to him it’s not the first time something like this has happened at this intersection. It seems the best solution is a stop sign at this intersection to get people to slow down. Is there any possible way to see if the city would put a stop sign here or take other steps to get people to slow down? I am not talking about having a police office watch the intersection. We need something permanent. One day some one will lose their life at this intersection, if it has not happened in the past
What is happening to First Street? Why doesn’t the city take care of this major road? It is literally crumbling to pieces. If you pay attention to any of the entry areas to the shopping centers you will see all the pebbles and rocks from the street. This road is the worst road in our city and it seems like there has been little or no effort to maintain it.
