GILROY – The Gilroy High boys basketball team dropped its second league encounter in its last three efforts, losing a tight 58-55 decision to visiting Salinas on Monday night.
“It was a very good basketball game. I can say that now that I have had a day to think about it,” head coach Jeremy Dirks said in a phone interview Tuesday. “Salinas played how we thought they would play at the beginning of the season.”
The Mustangs (15-5, 6-2 TCAL) defeated the Cowboys in the teams’ first meeting 50-34 back on Jan. 9.
Gilroy remains in second place in the TCAL with Palma still atop the standings. After the Mustangs, the middle of the pack gets a little cluttered with two teams (San Benito, Salinas) with four league wins apiece and two (Alisal and Alvarez) with three league victories.
Senior Greg Hamik put up a team-high 14 points and also poked away five steals. Dolapo Opere pulled down 11 rebounds, continuing his assault on the glass. Andrel Gaines contributed a solid scoring line, posting eight points to go along with eight assists and five boards. Michael Hartman had 10 and Michael Aldridge had eight points.
The Mustangs are back on the road for Friday’s league game against Alvarez.
“It would be nice to get off to a quick start to get that confidence and moral back up,” Dirks said.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
