GILROY – Kristian Urias had never scored four goals in one game before, let alone in one half.

The junior midfielder picked a perfect time to kill two birds with one stone, tallying four times in the first half for the Gilroy High boys varsity soccer team in a 5-0 win over Alvarez in Tri-County Athletic League action on a rainy Thursday night.

“I’m just trying to step up,” Urias said. “I was surprised I scored the three then I got the fourth one. I guess I just had it today.”

Head coach Armando Padilla challenged his team prior to the matchup to show a greater sense of urgency and energy from start to finish.

“I’m satisfied with that one,” Padilla said with a grin. “It was about playing with a purpose and executing what we work on in practice with a smile on their face. I think they enjoyed themselves today.”

Urias struck for his first goal two minutes into the contest, collecting a ball off of a defender inside the box and burying it in the top left corner of the net.

“It just bounced and came to me so I just shot it,” Urias said.

Urias’ onslaught continued 14 minutes later, accepting a nice pass from Forrest Alvarez and finishing the sequence for a 2-0 advantage.

After completing the hat trick in the 23rd minute, Urias was chosen to take a penalty kick that was awarded to the Mustangs. With the streak he was on there was no way he’d miss, making the score 4-0 before halftime.

“The good thing was that before we started the game we were mentally prepared,” said midfielder Clemente Pineda, who helped control the flow of the action, transitioning the Mustangs from defense to offense. “Today was one of the games where the three midfielders were connected and that makes a lot of difference.”

Sophomore forward Jonathan Diaz De Leon put the finishing touches on the scoring, capitalizing on a breakaway with a soft touch over the goalie.

“We had a bye on Tuesday so we had a lot of time to work on conditioning,” Pineda said. “As you can see, we never stopped running up and down.”

Roy Oneto kept the shutout in order for the Mustangs, making seven saves in the game.

The Mustangs are 10-3-3 overall and 6-1-1 in the TCAL, staying in second place behind Alisal.
