SALINAS – It took two-thirds of the season, but it finally happened Thursday night.
The Gilroy High boys volleyball team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, losing a tight 3-2 decision to Palma in Tri-County Athletic League action – a bit of vindication for the Chieftains who were swept by the Mustangs in the teams’ first meeting back on March 16.
“It was a long match,” coach Josh Corioso said. “I’m not going to lie to you the referees were pretty bad, but I’m not going to blame it on that. Our passing wasn’t there. Palma came to play. They were digging balls and getting touches on our hits.”
Despite the defeat, the Mustangs (17-9, 11-1 TCAL) remain in first place, though they are now tied with Monterey (19-5, 11-1 TCAL) at the top and must win their last four games of the season to obtain their first league championship.
The Mustangs will travel to Salinas high Tuesday and wrap up the home portion of their schedule Thursday against Carmel at 6: 30 p.m.
An away date with Alisal on May 4 precedes a massive league match to close out the regular season as
Gilroy will face Monterey on May 6 in Monterey.
