Morgan Hill for their achievements and awarded them $6,000 in
scholarships during a dinner May 5.
Gilroy Elks Lodge honored six graduating seniors from Gilroy and Morgan Hill for their achievements and awarded them $6,000 in scholarships during a dinner May 5.
Sobrato High School senior Joshua Yip received $1,000 from the Gilroy Elks, $400 from the California-Hawaii Elks Association and $4,000 from the Elks National Foundation. Other recipients included Live Oak High School seniors Gregory Wong, who received $4,000 from the Elks National Foundation and $1,000 from the Gilroy Elks; Emily Mandel, who received $800 from the California-Hawaii Elks Association and $1,000 from the Gilroy Elks; Gilroy High School seniors Connie Kuang, who received received $4,000 from the Elks National Foundation and $1,000 from the Gilroy Elks, and Nicholas Gibson, who received $1,000 from the Gilroy Elks. Sobrato High School senior Christina Cefalu received $1,000 from the Gilroy Elks.
The Elks National Foundation will award $3.64 million in college scholarships this year to 500 graduating seniors.
Local student takes home poster award
Las Animas Elementary School student McKenna Blean took home the Gilroy grand prize in the 2010 National Nutrition Month Poster Contest. Blean is one of about 80 Gilroy Unified School District fourth and fifth graders who submitted poster entries depicting their interpretations of this year’s theme – “Nutrition from the Ground Up.” Her poster was displayed at the Arteaga Supermarket Fruit and Veggie Festival on May 1, an event promoting good nutrition and physical activity, and will be featured in a documentary highlighting the Gilroy community’s efforts to promote health.
Blean also placed third in Santa Clara County among more than 400 entries. She was also honored at a reception May 6 at the Santa Clara County Public Health Department.
Glen View Elementary School student Nayely Chavez and Rod Kelley Elementary School student Vancherline P. Keo also received first place honors.
