o Outdoors columnist Ron Erskine will be giving a class through Gavilan Community Education and on Oct. 27 will lead a small group into the Bell Station entrance of Henry Coe State Park off of Highway 152 (Pacheco Pass). In a park that is 87,000 acres (136 square miles), this region is at least two days walk from any entrance regularly open to visitors. It is an exciting opportunity to for an intimate visit into the deep recesses of the park and learn about the park’s natural and human history. The group will assemble at Bell Station on Highway 152 and carpool well past the Dowdy Ranch. From there, the day hike will consist of five to eight miles over rolling terrain further into the park. Fall is great in Coe Park and this portion of Coe Park is beautiful. To sign up, go to: http://www.gavilance.com, then go to “courses,” and under “Leisure,” click “Outdoors.” Email Erskine at
