Dirty halls: “My daughter is attending Brownell and prior to school starting she searched out and found her classrooms and I walked with her through the Brownell halls. I’m sorry to say that I can’t use any milder words to describe the halls than filthy. Also disturbing is the condition of the front of the school. The grounds there are nothing but dirt and weeds. I realize this is a heavily used area by students, but surely this is no excuse for it’s condition. ”
Who else better for the Red Phone to contact than Jeff Gopp, manager of maintenance and operations for the Gilroy Unified School District.
Gopp said the school was cleaned this summer, but that “the halls just require some deep cleaning.” He said a major problem is that kids tend to spit gum on the ground. He said he would talk to the custodian and added, “It needs to be cleaned up. It’s one thing that didn’t happen with deep cleaning this summer and hopefully we can get that cleaned up in a timely manner.”
Secondly, the Red Phone asked him about the school grounds and what, if anything, was planned to make them a little more appealing.
Gopp said they’ve been to landscape architects to see what can be done with the front of the school. “The biggest issue there is the existing trees are shallow-rooted. … we’ve had at least three different contractors look at that and they’ve all said the same thing – roots will tear up concrete.”
Grass isn’t in the future either. “I can’t put down grass because … the kids walk on it.” He added that irrigation would have to be installed as well. The only other thing to do, he said, would be to completely change the whole configuration and they’re looking at several different options.
He added that the school was modernized in 2001, but wants parents to know, “It’s not that we’ve forgotten about it, we’ve got so many projects going. … We are working on the front of the school and my guess is it probably won’t be until the next school year.”
complaints galore: “I have a problem with the front page of your newspaper because the front page stories are always continued on the last page. I have a problem with all the sections of the paper because the columnists are always last. I can’t find my favorites because you divide the paper into so many sections and some of them are only one sheet folded in half. I don’t look for all those sections. I just read the front sections. I can’t help but notice you use a lot of reprints from the Christian Science Monitor. What’s the problem there? If you get the Mercury like I do, so much of it is redundant. … And your comics section, those are supposed to be comics? Like La Cucaracha and Get Fuzzy? Those people get paid for those?”
So many thoughts, this should be fun! The Red Phone hopes it can cover each one.
The front page stories that jump to the back, make it easy to read, so you shouldn’t talk smack.
Too many sections? We say no way. There is no such thing, is what we say.
They say variety is the spice of life, and we agree, it shouldn’t cause strife.
But you say the front sections are all you read – Then why complain, why feel the need?
We do sometimes use stories from CSM, we feel Gilroyans might enjoy some of them.
If you read them in that other paper too, when that subscription’s up, maybe you should be through?
Good caller, if you take issue with the comics page, just take it and line your parakeet’s cage.
It really should be news, not comics you crave, but as far as Get Fuzzy, it’s a Red Phone fave.
Thanks for your call and you comments too, and until next time, Red Phone bids you adieu.
