SARATOGA – Buckling down for its first shutout of the season, the Gilroy Browns Junior Midget Pop Warner team defeated Salinas 28-0 in the first round of the Peninsula Conference playoffs Sunday.

After an undefeated (8-0) regular season, the browns hold the No. 1 seed and played like the top team on Sunday.

“This game sent a defensive statement to the rest of the teams that are left in the playoffs,” assistant coach Joe McMurray wrote via e-mail. “Overall the boys played outstanding.”

The Browns established a 14-0 halftime lead on touchdowns by Brandon Boyd. He added his third score of the day in the third quarter.

Gilroy thwarted a Salinas scoring threat in the third, stopping the No. 8 seed four times from inside the Browns’ 10-yard line.

Mark Quinby put the finishing touch on the game with a 91-yard touchdown run.

TJ Cox and Nico McMurray had sacks for the Browns’ defense.

Next up for Gilroy is last year’s champ, Almaden. The Browns beat the Mustangs 28-8 earlier in the season.
