GILROY – Pop Warner’s local Gilroy Browns teams made strong playoff pushes with another successful week on the gridiron against the Cambrian Valley Longhorns.

Mighty Mights had several great plays and will be playing their final game next week before the Mighty Might Super bowl.

Junior Pee Wees rolled over the Longhorns, 22-6, securing a place in the playoffs but not before battling their toughest opponent (Hollister) next week. In the second quarter, running back Richie Sotelo ran for a touchdown with Nick J. Garcia kicking for the two extra points. In the third quarter, Sotelo had another touchdown followed by another successful Garcia kick. Almost to the fourth quarter, Gilroy’s Russell Brown intercepted the ball and returned it for 10 yards. Quarterback Nick Marra completed a 20-yard pass to Adam Cardenas for a crucial first down – which led the way for Eric Gonzalez’ rushing TD. Browns’ defender Rene Riosput hte icing on the cake with a late fumble recovery.

Pee Wees crushed the Longhorns, 35-8, as the defense held its opponents to less than six total yards of offense. The Longhorns scored on the initial punt return, but the Browns answered back with five consecutive touchdowns. Quarterback Steven Martinez threw for three touchdowns to receivers Ryan Costa, Jake Maslanka and Nick Gutierrez. In addition, running backs Marcos Guerrero and Jared Schreckengost both ran for TDs. The Pee Wees are now standing at 6-1.

Junior Midgets shut out Cambrian, 28-0, to lift their record to 6-1 on the season. In the first quarter, running back Jo Jo Gutierrez ran 45 yards up the middle for a touchdown. Teammate Frank Tomaseti kicked for two extra points. Quarterback Connor Farrotti threw 40-yard touchdown pass to receiver Isaac Carrillo – who also ran in for the extra point. In the third quarter, Tomaseti ran for touchdown and then kicked for the extra two points. Steven Gonzales took a pitch 80 yards from quarterback Tony Lujan. Then the defense led by Vince Giacalone, Michael Wilson, and Jonathon Williams (two interceptions) held the Longhorns at their two-yard line to keep the shutout.

Midgets couldn’t get anything going against the strong Longhorn defense – dropping a 23-0 decision. However, the Browns are still in playoff contention.
