Gilroy – Former GHS pitcher Andrea Bunten and the Canisius College women’s softball team are headed to the NCAA Division I Softball Championships for the second year in a row.

The Golden Griffins (22-17) face the nation’s No. 1 team Michigan (55-4) in a first-round game today at 7pm in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Canisius earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by winning last weekend’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament in Stratford, Conn., where the Golden Griffins overcame an opening round loss to Fairfield in the double–elimination tournament to win five straight for the title.

Bunten, who was named second team All-Mid Atlantic Region yesterday by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), struck out 21 batters in two wins over Iona, including the championship game. The senior, who enters the NCAA’s with a 13-10 record, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player for the second year in a row.

This marks the second straight year Canisius will face Michigan in the first round. Last year, the Griffs fell 6-3 to the Wolverines before being eliminated from the tournament by DePaul 8-0 in five innings.
