Kudos to the Dispatch: “I wanted to congratulate the Dispatch on getting the top award for a newspaper in its category. It has been wonderful and so improved since the new owner. You really deserve it. Thanks to the Gilroy Dispatch.”
• “Good job to our local paper for winning all the awards. It has improved recently and I for one, have noticed and appreciate your hard work. Thank you.”
Thanks callers. The Dispatch staff puts in long, hard hours to provide you and the rest of our community a quality hometown newspaper with local stories and top-notch photographs.
Hey, what’s going on?: “Hello, I’m calling to complain. I just spent 50 cents on a Dispatch. It’s Monday, July 11, and I just got a paper from the weekend of July 9, which is this past weekend. I’m kind of disappointed.”
For those who missed it, as of last year, the Dispatch is published Tuesday through Saturday.
Show off those bikinis: “I was just reading the Red Phone article regarding the thong bikinis and how everyone’s just outraged about them. What made me even more upset was the response. You are a newspaper and you are allowed to print pretty much whatever you want. It’s called Freedom of Speech and it makes me sad to know that we live in such a conservative city that you can’t even put in a picture of a thong bikini without everyone up in arms about it. And you, the newspaper, bowing down and apologizing.”
Thanks for recognizing the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights – which includes Freedom of the Press. Unfortunately many seem to forget about it. However, the editors, upon looking back on the photographs available and the photographs chosen for the Independence Rally photo page, believed they erred in judgment. There was no bowing down involved, just a simple apology to those who were offended – which were many.
Santa Teresa’s lookin’ good: “I drove on Santa Teresa Boulevard the other day and it’s such an improvement from what it used to be. And the construction traffic is a lot better too. I’m just wondering what the timeline on that project is. When can we expect it to be completely done? Thanks.”
The Dispatch recently ran an article on the widening project and the final soundwall panel being locked into place.
“The worst is over,” said Charlie Krueger, the resident engineer of the project. “But we still have several months of work left to do.”
The widening project broke ground 11 months ago, and is designed to increase traffic lanes on Santa Teresa Boulevard from two to four, and replace the six -foot soundwalls, many dating back to the late 1960s. A sidewalk and bike lanes will also be included in the mix; as well as beautification of the roadway by adding a landscaped median strip with decorative lighting.
“Hopefully, we’re making everyone happy,” Krueger said.
The project is expected to wrap up by the end of the year and will cost an estimated $8 million.
