Long’s Drugstore door

“In a previous Red Phone article you mentioned that Long’s had fixed their door that has been closed for God knows how long.

I was just there, (recently), and the door is still not functioning. So much for their word on getting it fixed. Why doesn’t the fire department do something about this?”

Red Phone:

E-mailed your question to Fire Marshal Jackie Bretschneider who relayed the message to the Fire Prevention Bureau in the field. They swung by Long’s yesterday afternoon, to check the door. The team said Long’s has taken the door out of service Bretschneider said in an e-mail.

“Miguel called me from the field and said that the door had been taken out of service by Longs. He is directing them to place it back into service. It may be that they have plenty of exits, and this exit is a security problem, however they have to come in to the building department and meet with me and the building official.”

After they meet, Bretschneider said it will be determined if Long’s can eliminate the door and what will be acceptable.

“Typically we have them remove the door altogether and replace it with a window and remove the signage, so that it does not create confusion in an emergency. We are recommending that they come in and meet with me and the building official Thursday so that we can go over the approved plans for the building and determine the exiting requirements,” Bretschneider wrote.

Red Phone has requested an update from the helpful fire marshal, so stay tuned good caller.

Restricted Parking?

“On two occasions the security guard at Village Green has warned us not to park on the public street in front of the Third Street entrance, siting that it is a construction site and we would be towed away.

There are no signs, nor curbs indicating that we cannot park there and I believe it is a public street. Does this security guard for Village Green have the authority to tell us we cannot park there or we will be towed away? What’s the deal with this anyway?”

Red Phone:

Caller, the deal is that according to city engineer Don Dey the security guard has no authority to go out and ask people to move their vehicles.

“That is a police department matter, but if there are no red curbs or signs restricting parking, then you can park there. That situation could change when Third Street is extended, but under current conditions, there is no issue with parking there,” Dey said. “The best people to contact about restrictions or what a guard is allowed to do this would be the police, it could be guard believes it is private property but it is not, it is a city road.”

Red light, Green light

“I have a question on the stoplight at Leavesley Road and Monterey Street. When you come to a stop heading west on Leavesley at the stop sign there at the intersection, are you required to stop with the green light to make a right turn or can you make a right turn without stopping?”

Red Phone:

Red Phone and engineer Don Dey aren’t too sure what you’re asking here caller, but if you’re asking if you have to stop at a green light when no arrow is required to turn, the answer is no.

Green means go and red means stop. However, if you are asking if you need to stop if the red signals for the train crossing there are flashing, but the traffic light is green, than yes, please stop until the signals are not flashing red and if the light is green, you can go.
