Eliminating eye sores
I recently saw a sign saying “cannery district.” Since the city tore down the cannery, why is that being used? It seems they want to get rid of “eye sores” and replace the cannery, old buildings etc. with the peachy keen. It’s sad when buildings are torn down. The history is gone forever.
Red Phone:
Dear Caller, Red Phone agrees – change can be scary. The cannery was once the lifeblood of our Garlic Capital, providing livelihoods for numerous generations of Gilroyans. In recent years, the cannery has sat vacant, shunned by developers because of its status as a brownfield site requiring environmental clean-up. Of course, times do, and must change. The site is now being transformed into 200 homes and 40,000 square feet of retail space. It is being hailed as the linchpin of downtown renewal. To the credit of developer South County Housing, the area now under redevelopment did not merely borrow the Cannery name. Before tearing down the building, the nonprofit builder spent months gathering photographs, memorabilia and oral histories from old timers who once worked at the cannery, or had relatives who worked there. The collection will be featured in a museum honoring the cannery in South County’s future headquarters at the site. In the meantime, some of those items can be found at a new sales office South County opened in downtown at 7488 Monterey St.

Any way you can update the “Opinion” section on your Web site so those of us who don’t have time to read the paper can still be up to date on our favorite current columnists? The ones you have listed seem a bit out of date.
