Carmel – Gilroy’s varsity field hockey team could be getting close to the level of play it’s been accustomed to over the past several seasons.
Wednesday at Carmel High School, the team ran roughshod over its competition winning 7-0.
Senior Amanda Vasquez was awarded ‘Stick of the Game,’ after contributing a goal and two assists. She fended off teammate Amanda Spellman for the honor, who had an assist to go with two goals, one of which was aided by Vasquez.
“(The team) had a great practice (Tuesday), the chemistry is just building,” coach Erin Gemar said. “They’re communicating well on the field, not just by talking, but playing together and anticipating the game.”
The coach also applauded the work of her two stellar seniors.
“Amanda Spellman had a huge impact. She’s playing great right now. She holds the ball on her stick really well,” Gemar said. “You can see (Vasquez) was quite influential as well.”
The squad got off to a hot start with Vasquez and Spellman scoring the team’s first two goals, and took a 3-0 lead into halftime through an unassisted attempt on goal by Elise Ogle.
The second half was even more in Gilroy’s favor as Vasquez fed Spellman for her second strike of the game and Ogle equaled her goal total from the prior half on a short corner, with key passes coming from Vasquez and Laura Spellman.
Alex Cabreros scored the sixth goal off an assist from Emily Hagan and Deena Morsilli capped off the action with a score aided by Amanda Spellman again.
Gemar gave credit to the Carmel goalie who was bombarded by 38 shots, but only let seven by.
“It was definitely in our (offensive) end of the court 55 minutes (out of 60),” Gemar said. “That goalie had a great game.”
The Mustangs next game will be Friday at home against what could be a tough TCAL opponent.
“We’re excited for our first home game against Monterey,” Gemar said. “We have no idea what they look like this season. They’re always a competitive, aggressive team, so they’ll be ready to play.”
Action kicks off at 5:30pm.
Note: The junior varsity team was also able to win with a shutout Wednesday, defeating Carmel 6-0. The team will host Carmel at 4pm on Friday before the varsity contest.
