Carrie Lee “Bird” (Giuffre) Martens passed away in San Jose on Jan. 6 after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in San Francisco 45 years ago. She was raised in the Willow Glen area of San Jose, and she moved to Gilroy in 1980.
Carrie was a cheerleader at Willow Glen High School and attended San Jose State after graduation. Besides her family and friends, her greatest passion was fitness and nutrition. She taught aerobics and personal fitness for over 20 years. She last worked as the Fitness Director at Gilroy Health and Fitness.
She is survived by her husband Dane Martens of Gilroy. She was the loving mother of Sheena and Logan Martens both of Gilroy; the daughter of Thomas and Ada Giuffre of San Jose; sister of Robin and husband Steve Denton of San Jose; and aunt of Lindsay Denton of San Jose. She is also survived by numerous loving friends and family members.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary Church, Gilroy. Burial will follow under direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
Carrie’s wishes were that everyone attending her funeral wear bright clothing (no dark colors) in celebration of her life, as well as everyone to bring a photo of themselves so she will be surrounded by her friends and family. Arrive early so that all photos can be placed around the casket before Services begin.
