championships in May through some strong performances in a meet
with Seaside last Wednesday.
Gilroy High’s boys and girls swim teams continued to qualify individuals and relay teams for the Central Coast Section championships in May through some strong performances in a meet with Seaside last Wednesday.
While the girls lost their meet with Seaside 108-60, two relay teams – 200 medley and 200 free – both made up of Isabella Comin, Alana Osaki, Meghan Collett and Christina Raby, were able to qualify for the postseason. Collett, slowed by sickness, missed an individual qualifying mark in the 100 fly by just a second.
The boys won their matchup with Seaside 113-55, which included an improved 200 medley CCS qualifying time through a mark of 1 minute, 46.39 seconds, set by Jacob Abruzzini, David Pribyl, Eddie Malick and Daniel Shields. Pribyl and Malick also qualified for CCS in individual events, with both making the cut in the 200 IM.
“That was a great meet. We had a lot of fun,” Gilroy coach Tom Clark said.
Putting out such an effort did not come without some costs, however.
Both of Gilroy’s squads were back in the water at Salinas the next day, Thursday, and the fatigue of having back-to-back meets took a toll.
“The kids were pretty tired having two meets in a row like that,” Clark said. “Seaside really took it out of them.”
The boys lost their matchup 110-85 while the girls fell 173-47. It is worth noting that the Mustangs were at a severe competitive disadvantage due to not having a diving team. The result was Gilroy lost points automatically to Salinas before the meet had even started.
The Mustangs will now prepare for their second-to-last regular season meet with San Benito on Friday. The meet will take place in Hollister at 3:30 p.m.
Gilroy returns home for a season-ending meet May 2 against Alisal.
