North Salinas softball, Mitty baseball win Division I titles

SAN JOSE – North Salinas won the Central Coast Section DIvision I Softball Championship with Saturday’s 3-0 shutout victory over Hollister in the section finals.

Both North Salinas and Hollister were league opponents of Gilroy in the Tri-County Athletic League. The Lady Mustangs fell in the quarterfinals to top seed Carlmont, 5-2. But Hollister beat Carlmont in the semifinals in 10 innings, 1-0.

Burlingame won the Division II title with a 6-0 victory over Pioneer and Notre Dame-Salinas, of T-CAL, claimed the Division III crown with a 3-0 win over Half Moon Bay.

Archbishop Mitty claimed the Central Coast Section Division I Baseball Championship with Saturday’s 9-1 victory over Wilcox in the section finals.

Gilroy baseball did not qualify for the playoffs this season.

Monterey won the Division II title with a 4-0 victory over Fremont and Santa Cruz claimed the Division II crown with a 13-2 win over Carmel.

GHS tumblers finish seventh in section

MOUNTAIN VIEW – The Gilroy High girls gymnastics team finished in seventh place at the Central Coast Section Championships inside Twisters Gymnasium in Mountain View.

Gilroy’s top placer was Luz Gonzalez – who scored a 7.825 on the vault, a 7.250 on the uneven bars, a 8.625 on the balance beam and a 8.775 on her floor exercise for a 26th place all-around total of 32.475.

Valeri Avila finished 40th with scores of 8.0 on the vault, 8.750 on beam and 8.700 on floor for a total of 25.450. Teammate Michaella Pierleoni placed 42nd with scores of 8.05 on the vault, 7.150 on beam and 8.675 on floor for a total of 23.875.

In addition, Gilroy’s Nicole Hee placed 30th on bars with a 7.825 and 50th on floor with a 7.250; Emily Gomez placed 42nd on bars with a 6.9 and 47th on beam with a 7.0; Erica Law placed 50th on vault with a 6.1 and 51st on floor with a 7.2.

Furthering the Gilroy cause were: Dayrel Wilson (6.45 on vault, 6.0 on bars); Marliz Copado (8.0 on vault); Jenna Fabie (7.7 on beam); Kim Kloster (7.6 on floor); and Stephanie Orth (7.45 on bars).

Gilroy’s all-around team score was 154.575 for seventh place. The section champion was Saint Francis with a team total of 186.8.
