Cedar Tree Dedication

Gilroy – The public is invited to a dedication celebration for Gilroy’s Hecker Pass Tree Row at 1:30pm Sunday, at Goldsmith’s Seeds, 2280 Hecker Pass Highway. The 1.4-mile long row of deodara cedars were recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The event was planned by the Gilroy Historical Society to recognize the Gilroy Rotary Club which organized the plantings on Arbor Day in 1930 and 1931 and the community members who planted the trees. Although several other cities had similar tree rows, Gilroy’s is the only one remaining in our region and still retains the original purpose of beautifying the western entrance to the city.

Joel Goldsmith, President of Goldsmith Seeds and Chair of the Hecker Pass Specific Plan will welcome guests. Elizabeth Barratt will speak on the historic significance of our tree row and arborist Barrie Coate will speak. Presentation of a proclamation by Mayor Al Pinheiro will conclude the event.
