Gilroy High School will have its cake and eat it, too, when it celebrates its 100th birthday during a party next week with all the trappings.
A centennial celebration will take place at 5:30 p.m., March 28 in the campus quad. The GHS campus is located on the corner of 10th and Princevalle streets. All alumni, parents, students and community members are invited to the celebration.
The event will feature a barbecue in the quad at 5:30 p.m., band/choir performances and guest presenters that include Gilroy Mayor Al Pinheiro and distinguished guests and alumni. In a nod to GHS’s mustang mascot, a live horse will be among the evening’s guests.
An open house starting at 6 p.m. on campus will feature student work, in addition to architectural renderings that give a glimpse of what GHS will look like after it receives $11 million in renovations in the coming year.
All former GHS band members are invited to bring their instruments for a giant group rendition of the National Anthem and GHS Fight Song. Any band members interested in participating should arrive at 5 p.m. for a short practice. Â
First located 385 I.O.O.F. Avenue, the original 1912 Gilroy High School was designed by notable 20th century Bay Area architect William H. Weeks (who also designed the Gilroy Carnegie Library on Church Street.) The present GHS campus was built in 1974.
