HAYWARD – It was a long journey for the Gilroy Chaos 10-and-Under traveling softball ball team on Memorial Day weekend, as they took second place at the Regional Battle in Hayward.

Playing eight games over the three-day tournament, the Chaos finished with a 4-4 record. The tournament was the first for the Chaos team this year.

Chaos lost their first two games on Saturday to Insanity Fastpitch of Hayward 5-4 and Central Valley Freeze 6-2. But Gilroy rebounded by beating the Morgan Hill Pride 12-0 and the Milpitas Renegades 5-3.

On Sunday, the Chaos defeated the San Jose Renegades 3-2. A 7-2 loss to Insanity Fastpitch, however, put the girls into the lower bracket of the tournament.

Chaos would fight back to get into the Championship game, topping the Central Valley Freeze 12-6 following a loss to the Freeze just a day prior.

Starting off the first inning for the Chaos, Madelaine Cox and Patricia Soria each recorded stand-up doubles while Cynthia Del Real, Maria Sandoval and Anjelica Reyes each recorded a single. Camille Garcia started off the second with a leadoff single followed by Kailey Eddy with a walk. With two runners aboard, Amber Herrera hit an RBI single. Soria then came up to bat with two on and smashed a three-run home run to help give the Chaos a 9-0 lead after two innings.

Eddy and Cox started off the fourth with walks before being plated on hits by Sandoval and Anna Gamboa, who both recorded two RBI in the game.

Gamboa pitched a superb game, shutting down the first nine batters of the game on her way to the win.

With the victory, Gilroy advanced to the championship game for a third contest against the undefeated Insanity Fastpitch.

Rebeca Reimal recorded a standup double in the second inning, and with two runners on base, Alexis Conlon had a 2-RBI single in the fourth. The runs would not be enough, though, as Chaos fell short 7-4 to take second place.

Pitching highlights throughout the three-day tournament included Gamboa recording 20 strikeouts, nine of which came by freezing batters. Maria Sandoval struck out 17, six of which were recorded against Insanity Fastpitch in the championship.
