The Chamber Singers from both Gilroy and Christopher High Schools are scheduled to perform at a Washington D.C. Heritage Festival April 2 – 7.
Phil Robb is the choir director of both GHS and CHS and is planning a full agenda for the kids.
“The Chamber Choirs have been travelling to sing at heritage festivals every year, one at Carnegie Hall in 2009, and this one in D.C. will give the students a chance to learn about American history in the afternoons and evenings after they sing during the mornings.”
The CHS and GHS choirs are two of 70 choirs participating and they will perform separately and also as a combined choir, according to Robb.
During his own high school years, Robb had the opportunity to sing at a military hospital in San Diego with his Phoenix, Ariz. high school choir and is hoping to provide the same experience for the Chamber Singers in April.
“Mayor Gage is meeting with (California Congresswoman) Zoe Lofgren this week and will discuss the possibility of the choirs singing at a military hospital in Arlington, Va. during our trip,” Robb said. “I did it when I was younger it really gave a different perspective on the Vietnam War and what was going on at the time.”
Robb is also looking forward to students participating in a choral workshop, which will be given by the choral director from George Washington University. There will also be a “choir exchange” where Robb’s choirs and local high school choirs will perform for each other.
