Gilroy – If you can’t drink responsibly, stay off the roadways.

California Highway Patrol officers will be out in maximum enforcement Thursday through Sunday night in preparation of St. Patrick’s Day festivities and drivers who may be driving under the influence.

“There is a little more activity because people are out Friday and Saturday night with a little more of an emphasis on having a good time,” said CHP Officer Chris Armstrong.

Last year, 54 individuals statewide were injured in 98 alcohol-related accidents during St. Patrick’s Day weekend, compared to 2004 when 92 people were injured in 124 crashes.

Police recommend those planning to raise a glass in honor of the holiday plan ahead: Designate a driver or plan to take a taxi or public transportation.

“If somebody does observe a vehicle they believe is impaired – call 911,” Armstrong said. Reduce speed and leave more space between you and the impaired vehicle. Do not attempt to stop them.

And more importantly – if you can – prevent individuals who have been drinking from getting into the driver’s seat in the first place.

“Do (your) best to not allow that person to drive,” he said. “Do not get into a vehicle if someone has been drinking.”

In addition to CHP officers, agents from the Alcoholic Beverage Control will be running enforcement operations, checking licensed premises and making sure no minors are present or served alcohol.
