TENNIS: Alisal sweeps doubles play in 5-2 win over Christopher

The good news first: The Christopher High girls varsity basketball team picked up a 55-50 victory over perennial section power North Salinas on the road Tuesday night. The not as good news: The Cougars led by as many as 21 points in the third quarter before being outscored 23-9 in the fourth and forced to hold on for the five-point win. Either way it’s dissected, though, the Cougars weathered the storm and moved to 6-2 this season after their fourth straight triumph.

“We need to work on closing out games,” said CHS head coach Heather Stewart, whose Cougars nearly let a 14-point fourth-quarter lead slip away against Gilroy in another five-point win last Friday. “Once this team figures out what they are capable of when they stick to the game plan and play to finish versus playing not to give up a lead, they will develop a confidence to close out games.”

The Cougars led 28-18 at halftime and 46-27 entering the final period.

“I was so proud of how they put those second and third quarters together,” Stewart said. “They are making strides, and I think they saw that tonight.”

Junior Hanna Tabron finished with 24 points, eight rebounds and eight steals. Sister Olivia Tabron, a freshman, posted 11 points and five rebounds, and Merrett Brown contributed 10 points and six rebounds.
