Teenage theater tech phenom Josh Greene-Gomez, 17, not only maintains a 4.0 GPA, he is also the tech director, set designer, lighting designer and set builder for the Christopher High School drama department’s upcoming senior production of “Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”
“I am working with the shop classes here at school, and especially with Jerome Rubena and Kenny McDavit,” he said. “We hung all of the lights and constructed the entire set for ‘Sweeney Todd.’”
Greene-Gomez and his fellow students also fabricated all of the sets and props, altered and welded a barber chair, made a trap door and built a slide as part of the set.
“Josh is just amazing – he is way beyond his years and very talented,” noted Dr. Kate Booth, CHS drama instructor.
One year ago, Greene-Gomez also started an event production company called Beyond Visual with two of his mentors, Scott Cody and Daniel Manning. Cody and Manning met Greene-Gomez through his church youth group.
“Scott and Daniel are two people who have given me so much advice and I’ve learned so much from them over the past few years about all aspects of sound, lighting and tech,” he said. “It all started one day a few years ago when I was asked to help out with some microphones at church.”
Greene-Gomez also credits another mentor, Joseph Scott, who volunteers at his church doing lighting.
“He told me to work hard during my teenage years and if I did that, I would be set. He has given me a lot of great advice on business and on life, really,” said Greene-Gomez.
The CHS senior has his sights set on majoring in business administration with a minor in theater or theology at Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles next year.
“God is foremost in my life,” says Greene-Gomez of his chosen Christian University, where he has been awarded a scholarship.
Performances of CHS’s senior production of “Sweeney Todd” will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 8, 9, 14, 15, and 16. There is a matinee showing at 2 p.m. Feb. 9. Cost is $10. CHS is located at 850 Day Road.
