SANTA CRUZ – Christopher High School’s inaugural cheer squad attended a United Spirit Association (USA) camp last week at UC Santa Cruz and walked away as one of the top teams to attend the event.

On the camp’s first night, the Cougars received a superior rating on their home routine, which is a routine the team prepared specifically for the camp. There is no higher rating a team can receive than superior.

Over the next few days, CHS earned superiors on all of its evaluations in stunting, performance cheer and game-action cheers, coach Jeannie Baumgartner said.

As a result, the Cougars took home a “Superior Plaque” for their overall body of work. The girls also brought the “Spirit Stick” back to Gilroy.

“[The stick] is a symbol of squad unity, hard work, and most of all, school pride,” Baumgartner said. “The girls practiced for three weeks before camp and work extremely hard to achieve these honors. This is such an accomplishment, because they are the first squad for Christopher and have never cheered together. They also don’t have a varsity squad as yet to lead the way, so I am very proud of their leadership and work ethic. I know they will be a dynamic squad this year, and a powerful example for all future squads to come at CHS.”
