Gilroy City Hall

The City of Gilroy will have its regular meeting at 6 p.m. Monday in Council Chambers, located at 7351 Rosanna St. Here are some of the upcoming items on the agenda.

Fire Department-based ambulance billing fees

City staff is recommending to Council that fire department ambulances that are called into action because of any sort of problem with private county contract ambulances be allowed to charge the same fees. Failure to pass the resolution could leave the fire department ambulances financially strapped and offering sub-standard EMS treatment protocols. In real language that means the fire department might not have all the things they need on board the ambulance.

Gilroy wants $600,000 from the CalHome Program

CalHome is a state-run program that helps provide down payment assistance to very low and low-income homebuyers. The maximum an individual can ask for is $60,000, so if the City of Gilroy could get $600,000 from CalHome, this could mean 10 families getting into local homes. It’s a win-win situation with no financial risk to the City of Gilroy, according to the City’s meeting agenda, as long as the use of funds adheres to State guidelines.

Who wagers City Council will approve new gaming ordinance?

A roll call vote for an ordinance that will allow for unlimited wagers and a larger variety of games in local cardrooms on Monday could usher in a new era in Gilroy gambling. If the measure passes, gone will be the days of telling people how much they can wager in a game or even what games they can play, bringing Gilroy in line with the State of California. If the ordinance passes, there will be a one-year probationary period. Gilroy Chief of Police Denise Turner will make a report to the Council at the end of the probationary period, at which point the wager limit will be abolished for good or reinstated. It is worth noting that even though cardrooms can currently decide what games to offer, they can’t go outside a list approved by the State, they can’t increase the number of tables without City Council approval (currently, the most tables cardroom can have is eight).

Oh RDO, RDO! Wherefore art thou, my ‘special’ RDO?

The drive continues to get builders building in Gilroy with the City Council set to approve a resolution that will amend the Gilroy Zoning Ordinance. The amendment will create Residential Development Ordinance exemptions for projects that submit an application to the City between April 3, 2013 and April 3, 2014.
