Dear Editor:
I want to share a wonderful cultural experience our family recently had here in Gilroy. Although I’ve been familiar with John Bisceglie’s local productions, it wasn’t until my two daughters expressed an interest in auditioning for the “American Ideal” musical (in cooperation with the City of Gilroy’s Community Services Department) that I became more intimately involved with such a production. In a word, “WOW”! For months before the fourteen scheduled performances, I was amazed at the commitment of all the children. Many had to forego activities such as snow trips, etc. to participate in this production and it was a valuable lesson in commitment and responsibility.
Mr. Bisceglie was a master at getting the kids to work together and soon, a mass of individual “paint blobs” became a finished work of art.
I noticed a number of things about this group of kids: they are outgoing, friendly, confident as well as talented. They are developing skills that will serve them well in the future, no matter what direction they choose. Our daughters were welcomed into the group and made many new friends.
I’m glad this type of program is available in Gilroy. The production was a true melding of art and commerce. Parents pay for the program through Gilroy’s Community Services, purchase a block of tickets to sell and commit to help in various tasks – separation of “art and state”, the way it should be.
I commend Mr. Bisceglie as well as producer, Judy McBrearty, and all the others who made this musical a “mountain top” experience for our entire family. What a blast!!
