GILROY – Work has begun on a new housing development on the southeast corner of First Street and Wren Avenue.

The project, preliminarily being called Oak Commons, will feature 137 market-rate, single-family homes, said City Planner Gregg Polubinsky. He estimated the 1,100- to 1,600-square foot units will sell in the low $400,000’s.

The project is named in honor of two oak trees standing on the property. The trees have been incorporated into the design plan, Polubinsky said, with one near the main entrance and the other in a central courtyard.

The roughly 13-acre property is tucked behind the Blockbuster Video at 780 First St. A strip of undeveloped land lining First Avenue will someday house a commercial center, but that project is separate from the Oak Commons project.

A unique feature of the development are the shared outdoor rotundas that lead to residents’ driveways. Four to six homes will be clustered around each rotunda, and all rotundas will lead to the main entrance off Wren Avenue. Polubinsky said such a design is a first for a housing development in Gilroy.

Workers have begun rough grading the property. Model homes and a sales office will be built sometime this fall.
