JUST RUN Youth Fitness Program
Gilroy – JUST RUN, a youth fitness program of the Big Sur International Marathon, is expanding to the Gilroy, Morgan Hill and San Benito County regions, and will be hosting informational Kickoff receptions for school administrators, teachers, youth leaders and interested parents.
The JUST RUN Kickoff presentation for the Morgan Hill and Gilroy area will be held from 5 to 6:30pm Monday, at the Holiday Inn, 17035 Condit Road in Morgan Hill.
JUST RUN is a free program geared towards second- through eight-grade children. It was developed to assist schools and other youth organizations in the promotion of fitness and healthy lifestyle choices.

Red Cross Disaster Response Training
Gilroy – The American Red Cross Santa Clara Valley Chapter is seeking volunteers to serve on Disaster Action Teams in Gilroy and Morgan Hill which provide services to local victims of fires, floods and other natural disasters in the South County Area. The Red Cross is offering a free training to give volunteers the skills and tools needed to respond to disasters.
The first class, “Fulfilling the Mission,” will be held from 6 to 10pm, Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Gilroy Foundation offices at 8339 Church St.

Ceremony for T.J. Owens Academy
Gilroy – The Gilroy Unified School District and the Gavilan Joint Community College District, and the principal, staff, and students of T.J. Owens Gilroy Early College Academy will unite at the Grand Opening and Dedication Ceremony for the new T.J. Owens Gilroy Early College Academy from 5 to 6pm, Tuesday Sept. 11, located on the Gavilan College campus portable building 17.
The community is invited to attend a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony. Light refreshments will be provided. Tours of the new high school will be available.

Be the ‘Biggest Loser’ in Gilroy
Gilroy – Saint Louise Regional Hospital will team up with Gilroy Health and Fitness to bring “Biggest Loser” Challenge to Gilroy. Gilroy Health and Fitness and Saint Louise Regional Hospital will award top community “losers” in the local “Biggest Loser” Challenge by sending them on a mini-vacation along with other prizes.
The “Biggest Loser” Gilroy Challenge begins Wednesday, Sept. 12 with an in-gym launch and celebration. The community is encouraged to attend bi-weekly public weigh-ins at Gilroy Health and Fitness located on 8540 Church St.

Flower Lovers Club Meeting
Morgan Hill – The Morgan Hill Flower Lovers Club (including San Martin and Gilroy) will meet Sept. 12, the second Wednesday of the month at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center at 12:30pm. The next meeting will be held Oct. 3, the first Wednesday of the month, as usual.

Hospice Volunteer Training Scheduled
Gilroy – The Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice will hold free training sessions Sept. 28, 29 and 30 for volunteers, age 18 and older, who will assist the non-profit VNA hospice team in providing services during the final stage of a person’s life. Volunteers are needed to help in all areas served by the VNA Hospice, from King City to Morgan Hill and throughout the valley and peninsula areas.
Volunteer opportunities with the VNA Hospice range from general office assistance to working with patients in the home, performing bereavement follow-up support as well as helping to facilitate support groups
The first session will be from 6 to 9pm Sept. 28. The other sessions are from 9am to 6pm, Sept. 29 and 30.
VNA provides care to all who are in need, within available VNA resources as provided by generous gifts from the community. Training will be held at the VNA Salinas office conference room, 6 Quail Run Circle. Persons interested in volunteering are asked to call Joseph Lumello at 758-8243 no later than Sept. 17.

Sound Reading Solutions Tutoring
Gilroy – COSTCO is looking for community volunteer tutors interested in tutoring fifth-grade students in “Sound Reading Solutions” program. The program starts Sept. 25 at Antonio Del Buono Elementary School. Two 45-minute classes per week with one hour preparation time. All volunteers will be trained and will be required to have a background check and fingerprinting.

SV Symphony Fundraising Events
Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony’s annual fundraising campaign will feature its 34 season of classical and contemporary music, and the first concert Romantic Masterworks, showcases at 7:30pm, Sat. Oct. 6 at the Gavilan College Theater.
