Dear Editor:
We have been deluged with the ravings of Dennis Taylor for several weeks now. I feel it is in bad taste to refer to the City Council as the whores of Wal-Mart.
Further, more than one column on Taylor’s dislike for Wal-Mart is not justified.
Where is the “editor” that allows this tirade to continue?
Please read the “information” put forth by this author. You will find that he is what I would refer to as a journalistic terrorist. He seeks to vilify and destroy by innuendo, guilt by association, and name calling.
This emulates some of our politicians. These are not reasons to form an opinion on Wal-Mart or any other subject. We would be better off if you could find a better columnist. Our mayor and City Council deserve better treatment and constructive criticism when justified, not vilification.
Wal-Mart went through this same gauntlet when they originally came to Gilroy. There were dire predictions of jobs and business lost. Some of that did occur, although not as severe as predicted. (Severe enough to those who lost their jobs though)
Since this is already behind us, why does Wal-Mart deserve this bad publicity? It seems a few union organizers feel slighted that they aren’t getting their cut of the payroll. Is it groceries? Target sells groceries. So does Costco, Longs, and several others.
Why are the council members only concerned with Wal-Mart? If the public doesn’t want Wal-Mart to succeed they can vote with their pocketbook. It looks like a small, special interest group wants to control things for the rest of us and I resent that.
What about traffic and pollution? It will increase the traffic in the area. It likely will be spread out during the day and night (24-hour store) so the impact will be minimized. If it gets unpleasant, people won’t go there.
The same cars that frequent Wal-Mart now are currently in the vicinity of the new site. It’s only about four good stones throw away, so any increase in pollution will likely not be noticed either. Think about it.
Wal-Mart location decisions are made by rather expert planners. Perhaps, we could feel flattered they have so much faith in Gilroy.
Please get a new columnist who can reason with facts and provide some humor rather than vitriolic tirades.
