DEAR EDITOR:
It’s the height of irony that in California of all states protests are being made in the name of the environment and the questioned identity of tribes. The native “gold rush” of casinos doesn’t account for even 1/100th of the damage done to the environment and the population that the famed California gold rush did. At the beginning of the gold rush the native population was more than 150,000; by its end it was less than 40,000.
The most brutal genocide of United States history and Dispatch columnist Robert Mitchell begrudges Indians what little they have that is left. Is it any wonder that the rest of the world despises the United States?
