Dear Editor:
I don’t think Dennis Taylor had to tell us that he doesn’t “care what the Bible says.” This is a given. Also, he seems to think that it is only Christians or other religious groups that are against “gay” marriage. A whopping 66 percent (give or take a couple percentages) of Americans are against homosexual marriage. Either there are a lot of Christians in these here United States or there are a lot of fellow-travelers out there.
This country, I might remind Dennis, was founded by conservative Christians. And by the time the “sacred” Constitution was written, marriage was still considered between a man and a woman only. It was one of those things that people did not need to debate. It also was a given. In fact, marriage between a man and a woman is time-tested. It has passed the test. It is the foundation of a good and just society.
The Constitution is a good document but it isn’t the best document. The U.S. Constitution was composed and signed by mostly Christian men. This was the best that godly men of their day could produce. However greater than the Constitution is the foundation from which it draws its strength, the Bible. I, for one, will live by the precepts of the Bible as God gives me strength. If the Bible and the U.S. Constitution conflict in any way, I will choose what the Bible says. The Constitution can be amended, adjusted, changed, ditched, superceded, re-interpreted (as it is in our day) but the Bible will always be as it is, the Word of God. The Bible is like the rudder of a ship for a society, keeping it on course.
Is it any wonder why this is the greatest country in the world. It is because of its Christian beginnings, its Christian foundation, its laws drawn from the Christian faith and the Bible, its Christian people being salt and light to a dark, ungodly and immoral world. It is also because of Christian tolerance, giving, self-sacrifice, and, yes, Christian love. Christians love their neighbors, their enemies, unbelievers, the ungodly, and, yes, Christians love homosexuals. There are even among us those that used to be ungodly, unbelievers, unchurched (like myself) and those addicted to every sinful behavior, including drugs, pornography, sex (including homosexuality), gossip, etc., etc.
We are not perfect but we will not give up our country to lawlessness.
