DEAR EDITOR:
I’m glad Robert Mitchell got back to us so quickly regarding his views on American Indian people. He is right about one thing. It isn’t “out of my system yet.”
Mitchell made the mistake of lying to advance a philosophy and I have no intention of letting him get away with it. He made assertions that would lead anyone to believe that California Natives have been conducting scam operations by setting up fraudulent tribes and of seeking tribal status solely for the purpose of obtaining casino profits.
I pointed this out and challenged him to prove it. All I want to do now is to point out that he refused the challenge. All of his whining about “political correctness” is mere subterfuge and demonstrates one thing: Mitchell made up “facts” about a group of people for the fun of it and hasn’t been big enough to set it right.
None of the other barbs he shot back have any significance. Comments about Indian gaming not being run by Indians are too foolish to fight about. No one slams any other group this way when they hire consultants. IBM does it and so do others. Mitchell could use a few consultants himself.
No one of any kind of person is 100 percent in favor of casino gaming, and California Indians are no exception. Of course if Robert Mitchell has never put a quarter in a slot machine or bought a lotto ticket, then he has the moral authority to denounce it as an industry, but I bet that isn’t really the case.
