A mustard with local ties won a silver medal at a worldwide competition April 29 in Middleton, Wis., according to the National Mustard Museum.

Garlic Festival Foods took home second place in the garlic mustard category with its Sweet and Spicy Garlic Mustard, which is available at Garlic City Mercantile in Downtown Gilroy.

The mustard was bested by Norfolk, Neb., company Singing Pig and its Wine Garlic Mustard but finished ahead of the 2008 winner, Obester’s Garlic Mustard, distributed by Le Nebbia Winery in Half Moon Bay.

Garlic Festival Foods was founded in Gilroy in 1986 by Caryl Simpson and has offices in Hollister and Santa Clara.

March for Babies fundraiser event

The March of Dimes will hold a March for Babies fundraising and awareness event beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday at Christmas Hill Park. The money raised through March for Babies will support lifesaving research, community services, education and advocacy that helps babies get a healthy start. Vallie Bishop Room dedication ceremony

Open house and fly-in at San Martin Airport

The Wings of History Air Museum and San Martin Airport will hold an open house and fly-in from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. City sponsoring homebuyer workshop

The City of Gilroy is sponsoring a workshop to teach locals the basics of becoming successful first-time homebuyers.

The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 21 at the City Council Chambers at City Hall. The program is hosted by Project Sentinel, a nonprofit agency that provides services to help people resolve housing problems.

Topics will include: reviewing the overall process and ramifications of ownership, assessing financial qualifications and navigating the loan approval process.

Lunch will be provided. The workshop is free, but early enrollment is required.

Girls Scouts camping at Gilroy Gardens

Natural Sciences Days at Gilroy Gardens

South Valley Civic Theater opens ‘Curtains’

Standard first aid certification course

This American Red Cross will present a first aid course at 9 a.m. Saturday at 2731 N. First St., San Jose. The course meets OSHA guidelines for first aid programs and combines lecture, interactive video demonstrations featuring emergency scenarios that are likely to occur in a workplace environment and hands-on training to teach participants lifesaving skills. Meet rehabilitated WERC wildlife

Sierra Club hike at Uvas Canyon Park

The Sierra Club will hold a hike Sunday at Uvas Canyon County Park. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Home Depot parking lot off of East Dunne in Morgan Hill or at 10 a.m. at the lower parking lot at Uvas Canyon. There is a $6 to $10 entrance fee to the park.
